Subject: I-D ACTION:draft-fair-ipdvb-req-02.txt

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts
directories.

Title : Requirements for transmission of IP datagrams over DVB
                          networks
    Author(s) : G. Fairhurst et al.
    Filename : draft-fair-ipdvb-req-02.txt
    Pages : 28
    Date : 2002-11-1

This document contains requirements for a framework for transport of
IP Datagrams over ISO MPEG-2 Transport Streams (TS). The MPEG-2 TS
has been widely accepted not only for providing digital TV services,
but also as a subnetwork technology for building IP networks. One
example is the Digital Video Broadcast (DVB), specified by standards
published by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute
(ETSI).
The document identifies the need for the definition of a set of network
protocols to standardise the interface between the MPEG-2 Transport
Stream and an IP subnetwork. It also suggests an optimised
encapsulation method for IP datagrams. The requirements for these
functions are described, and a framework proposed for their
implementation.

type "cd internet-drafts" and then

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
    mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
    "FILE /internet-drafts/draft-fair-ipdvb-req-02.txt".

NOTE: The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
    how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

IP-DVB Mailing List

REQUIREMENTS: draft-fair-ipdvb-req-02.tx
This draft was updated with corrections received from the list,
a minort mistake in the "expires" line makes it look like the draft
expired before it was written (sorry).

I intend to take more input on the subject of address resolution
from people at the IETF meeting in Atlanta next week. All contributions
are welcome via the list or email and we can talk face-to-face!

ENCAPSULATION draft-unisal-ipdvb-enc-00.txt (Expired)
This document is now with the authors for edit.

There are outstanding issues on:
MAC address format - is this an extension header
or an optional part of the basic header?

Use of the AFC bits in the MPEG-2 TS Packet header.

ADDRESS RESOLUTION
There is still a need for an ID from the ip-dvb
activity to clarify how address resolution could work.

IETF STATUS
This work has not yet been brought before the IETF at A BoF
and IETF-55 does NOT include a BoF on this subject.

Presentations or contributions to a future BoF will be welcomed by
the list, at least two months before the next IETF
(Spring 2003 - 56th IETF March 16-21, 2003 San Francisco).

http://www.ietf.org/meetings/0mtg-sites.txt

Gorry Fairhurst will be at the Atlanta IETF, and will be organising
an informal discussion in the Bar (date, venue to be confirmed on the
IETF notices board near registration desk). Input requested on
user need, address resolution options, and need to build an address
resolution protocol suited to IP

- suggestions of timing of this are welcome via email to:
gorry@erg.abdn.ac.uk.

Best wishes,

Hello,

I'm a young PHD student in France and so far it is the first time, I =
have posted a message here.

    I'm wondering about section packing:
when small sections have to be encapsulated in Transport Stream =
packets (<184 B), is there padding or not? And if there is, could it be =
that more than 2 small sections(<60B) may be encapsulated in a same =
MPEG-TS packet?
If it is possible, I would like to know how does the pointer enable =
such a thing? Is there any specific mechanism?

    Best Regards,

Hi Julien.
The pointer field gives you the offset to the first payload starting in
the particular tsc. For finding a potential further payload starting
within the same tsc, you would have to consider the section-length of
the first new payload. For distinguishing the beginning of a further
section from cell-padding you would then have to check the table-id
field, if it's 0xff (not allowed as table-id), it is padding (which
should be 0xff).
