Would you please arrange for that address to be serviced?

I ran across it while testing some stuff, and I had
no idea what it is (I'm still not exactly sure).
So I did the obvious thing: stick
it in my Web browser and go look. No joy.

Please put a file or something there that gives folks
a clue about how that URI is intended to be used.

Subject: [Moderator Action] Redirect/Bind/User Mapping Question

This is probably a rookie question but I've scanned the threads and
papers and don't have an answer yet. We want to allow a user to access
our WEBDAV server http://user.server.com and map their username to the
url using mod_rewrite: ie after the url rewrite we would have
http://user.server.com/username which would point to their WEBDAV files.
When I hit the site with web folders if maps the parent directory side
by side with the first level directory that we should see ( The parent
directory is called sv and there are 3 levels under it called level1,
level2, level3. When web folders maps we end up with sv and level on
shown on the same window).

Cadaver responds with:

Could not access / (not WebDAV-enabled?):
Did not find a collection resource.

The access file looks like:

206.29.241.4 - - [08/Aug/2000:19:33:19 -0500] "OPTIONS / HTTP/1.1" 401
478
206.29.241.4 - sv [08/Aug/2000:19:33:23 -0500] "OPTIONS / HTTP/1.1" 200
0
206.29.241.4 - sv [08/Aug/2000:19:33:23 -0500] "PROPFIND / HTTP/1.1" 207
615

And the conf file looks like:

<Directory /home/web/users/site/>
    AllowOverride FileInfo AuthConfig Limit
    Options MultiViews Indexes SymLinksIfOwnerMatch IncludesNoExec
    AuthType Basic
    AuthName users
    "A bunch of ldap stuff to authenticate the user"
   require user sv
    <LimitExcept GET HEAD OPTIONS>
        DAV On
        RewriteEngine On
        RewriteCond     %{REQUEST_URI}  ^/$
        RewriteRule     ^$       /%{REMOTE_USER}/ [L]      when we
change this to [R] for redirect we get a 302 error.
    </LimitExcept>
</Directory>

Is there a better way to map user directories? Thanks for the help in
advance.

Mark

I am attempting to develop a Java Applet with simple Webdav functionality -
I currently have an Applet that reads an XML file from a web server and I
would like to adapt it so that it reads the file from a Webdav server and
can perform updates ie
a) locks the file
b) deletes/replaces the file
c) unlocks the file

As it is a fairly simple Applet I didn't want to use the IBM DAV4J
libraries.
I am testing against mydocsonline and having trouble getting the Applet
working-even with a PROPFIND command - not sure if it is a problem with the
way Webdav works with mydocsonline or whether it is a fundamental mistake
in the way I'm going about things.

The return code I get is error 401, even when I put in Basic authentication
command - I have tried hardcoding the username/password.

(As a second issue - when I access the webfolders HTML page referencing the
applet, IE prompts for username and password - is there any way of picking
up the username and password values that have been entered in IE and passing
them through to my PROPFIND command ?)

Apologies if these are 'rookie' questions, but I'd appreciate any
assistance - as there are few simple examples of Java code and Webdav, I'd
be
happy to share source sample code once I have a working version.

See below for code explanation...

Regards,

JC Samson

I'm using the URL class i.e.

       URL url=new URL("http://webfolders.mydocsonline.com/rfc 2518.htm");
        int port=url.getPort
        if (port==-1)port=80;// if no port use the default
        String host=url.getHost
        Socket socket = new Socket(host,port);
        InputStream from_server=socket.getInputStream();
        PrintWriter to_server=
          new PrintWriter(new OutputStreamWriter(socket.getOutputStream()));

The code to create the PROPFIND looks like this :

         String userpass="";

{
               userpass=base64EncodeString("username:password");

             } catch(UnsupportedEncodingEx
ception

          to_server.println("PROPFIND " + filename + " HTTP/1.0\r\n\r\n");
          to_server.println("Host:" +  host);
          to_server.println("Content-Type: text/xml");
          to_server.println("Authorization: Basic " + userpass + " ");
           query="<?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"utf-8\"?>"+
            "<D:propfind xmlns:D=\"DAV:\">"+
            "<D:allprop/></D:propfind>";
          to_server.println("Content-Length: "+ query.length());
          to_server.println(query);
          to_server.flush();

My only thoughts are:

>           to_server.println("PROPFIND " + filename + " HTTP/1.0\r\n\r\n");

This looks like it would send too many CRLF's -- I think you should omit the
\r\n\r\n at the end of the line, since the CRLF added by println should be
sufficient. Also, you should be sending HTTP/1.1, not HTTP/1.0.

Perhaps it also expects a User-Agent header as well. Do you get the same

A common concern raised by developers of WebDAV clients and servers is the
deficiencies of HTTP/DAV status reporting. For example, two common problems
are overloading of HTTP status codes to mean several different conditions,
and the inability to precisely report many kinds of status using the
existing status codes. Even when an existing status code does cover a
condition well, there is no mechanism for passing supplemental status
information. WebDAV provides two operand methods such as COPY and MOVE where
an error could occur at the source or destination, a capability outside the
scope of HTTP error reporting. It is also possible that multiple error
conditions can simultaneously occur, yet only one can be reported in a
response.

Especially for 4xx series status codes, there is a limited number of status
codes, leading to conservative use of status codes within the protocol
development community, and leads to overloading of existing status codes. A
principled expansion of the HTTP status code space seems to be a cornerstone
of any effort to improve HTTP/DAV status reporting.

To evaluate and address these concerns, a new mailing list has been created
to discuss issues concerning improved HTTP/DAV status reporting.

To post to this list, send your email to:

  report@webdav.org

Subscription instructions and archives are available at:

  http://mailman.webdav.org/mailman/listinfo/report

This mailing list is welcome to all, and maintains a public archive.

While the impetus for this discussion is coming from the WebDAV community,
this problem affects HTTP broadly, and hence a new forum for discussion has
been created. It is expected that list members will determine where
specification work, if any, will take place.

FYI, the updated charter for the WebDAV working group has been approved by
Ned Freed and Patrik Faltstrom, the Application Area Directors. The revised
charter was initially proposed to the working group July 7:

http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/w3c-dist-auth/2000JulSep/0034.html

It was also discussed at the Pittsburgh IETF meeting.

Essentially, the charter now states that WebDAV WG will finish the advanced
collections work, revise 2518 for Draft Standard status, develop an access
control protocol, and develop property registration procedures.

The new charter is available at:

http://www.ics.uci.edu/pub/ietf/webdav/charter.html

It is also linked to the WebDAV WG home page:

JC:

You also need a space between the last request header and the body of the
message. Also leave off the trailing space on the authorization header.
Try:

PROPFIND / HTTP/1.1

Connection:Keep-Alive

Conent-length:XXX

Content-type:text/xml

 Accept-language:en-us

 Authorization:Basic YWRtaZ46YWRtaW4=

 Host:webfolders.mydocsonline.com

 User-agent:Microsoft Data Access Internet Publishing Provider DAV 1.1

 Depth:0

<?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"utf-8\"?>
<D:propfind xmlns:D=\"DAV:\">
<D:allprop/>
